Historical River Market District
The Kansas Town settlement, now known as Kansas City, was formally incorporated in 1850. Situated near the Missouri River and Kansas River, Kansas Town was originally the domain of the Kansa Native Americans (Kaw Indians) and was first explored by Meriwether Lewis and William Clark during their Louisiana Purchase expedition in 1804. The building that Eljay’s now occupies was built in 1856 when Tootle, Hannah, and Leach opened a dry good store. So far we haven’t been able to discover exactly why a safe was installed in the building, but it’s here and there’s surely a good story to discover!
We are just beginning to explore the history of this amazing area ourselves and invite you to join us in learning more about Historical River Market District and how it has developed over the past 158 years.
